Transform your backyard or patio into a magical retreat with this simple DIY project. By flipping a tomato cage upside down and adorning it with string lights, you can create a stunning giant outdoor lantern that not only illuminates your space but also adds a touch of whimsy and elegance. This project is perfect for anyone looking to enhance their outdoor aesthetic with minimal effort and cost.
Place your giant outdoor lantern in a cozy corner of your patio or garden. Pair it with outdoor furniture in neutral tones to highlight the warm glow of the lights. Consider using similar warm white lights in other areas of your outdoor space to create a cohesive, inviting atmosphere. Complement the lantern with potted plants or hanging fairy lights for a bohemian touch.
Giant Tomato Cage Lantern
Materials
1 large wire tomato cage
40 feet of warm white string lights
Zip ties or twist ties
Outdoor extension cord (if necessary)
Directions
Flip the tomato cage upside down so that the wide circular base is now at the top.
Secure the points of the tomato cage together at the top using zip ties or twist ties to form a conical shape.
Start wrapping the string lights from the bottom (formerly the top of the cage) and work your way up, spacing the lights evenly around the structure.
Use additional zip ties or twist ties to secure the string lights to the wire frame as needed.
Once the lights are wrapped around the entire cage, plug the string lights into an extension cord if necessary, and place the lantern in your desired outdoor location.
Variations & Tips
For a more colorful display, use multicolored string lights instead of warm white. You can also spray paint the tomato cage in a metallic or matte finish to better match your outdoor decor theme. Consider using solar-powered string lights for an eco-friendly alternative that eliminates the need for an extension cord. To create a softer glow, wrap a sheer fabric around the cage before adding the lights, which will diffuse the light and add a touch of elegance.
