Create a stunning hanging rain chain planter that will transform your patio into a lush, green oasis. This DIY combines the rustic charm of terracotta with the elegance of trailing ivy, all beautifully suspended on a gleaming copper wire. Perfect for adding a touch of nature to your outdoor space, this planter is both a practical and aesthetic upgrade, catching rainwater while showcasing vibrant greenery. It's a simple yet eye-catching way to enhance any garden, balcony, or porch.
Hang the rain chain planter from a pergola or eaves to allow the ivy to cascade freely. Pair it with terracotta or copper accents to create a cohesive look, such as copper lanterns or terracotta tile flooring. The warm tones of the terracotta and copper will complement earth-toned or neutral outdoor furniture, creating a harmonious and inviting atmosphere. Ensure the surrounding space has ample natural light to highlight the contrasting textures and colors.
Terracotta and Copper Ivy Rain Chain Planter
Materials
12 small terracotta pots (4-inch diameter)
20 feet of thick copper wire (12 gauge)
12 trailing ivy plants (small enough to fit in pots)
Wire cutters
Protective gloves
Drill with a ceramic bit
Directions
Using the drill and ceramic bit, carefully drill a hole in the center of the bottom of each terracotta pot. Ensure the hole is large enough for the copper wire to pass through.
Put on protective gloves and uncoil the copper wire. Cut a length of about 20 feet using wire cutters.
Thread the copper wire through the hole in the first terracotta pot, starting from the bottom side, and pull it through until about 3 feet of wire extends above the pot.
Secure the pot in place by twisting the wire around itself just above the pot. Ensure it's tightly looped so the pot does not slip.
Continue threading the rest of the pots onto the copper wire, leaving about 6 inches of space between each pot. Secure each pot as you go by twisting the wire above it.
Once all pots are threaded and secured, plant one trailing ivy in each pot. Ensure the soil is packed firmly around the ivy roots to keep them stable.
Finish the rain chain by forming a loop at the top of the wire for hanging. Twist the wire securely to ensure it holds the weight of the pots.
Hang the finished rain chain planter from a sturdy hook or beam where it can catch rainwater and allow the ivy to trail beautifully.
Variations & Tips
For a variation, consider using different types of trailing plants such as string of pearls or creeping jenny for varied textures and colors. You can also experiment with different pot sizes or shapes for a more eclectic look. If you prefer a more uniform appearance, paint the terracotta pots with a weather-resistant paint in a color that complements your outdoor decor. Additionally, for an indoor version, use artificial ivy and place the rain chain planter in a sunlit room to bring a touch of greenery indoors.
