This project transforms everyday waste into a chic and functional decorative piece that impresses guests. It offers a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to store-bought citronella candles, allowing you to customize the colors and scents to match your personal style and patio decor.
Place the DIY citronella candle towers on a wooden outdoor table or along the edge of a patio for a stylish, rustic look. Surround the candle towers with small potted plants or succulents to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
Citronella Candle Towers
Materials
Empty tuna cans (cleaned and dried) - 6
Yellow and green crayons - 20 pieces
Candle wicks with metal tabs - 6
Citronella essential oil - 1 ounce
Double boiler or microwave-safe container
Wooden skewers or chopsticks - 6
Hot glue gun with glue sticks
Newspaper or drop cloth
Directions
1. Place newspaper or a drop cloth on your working surface to protect it from wax spills.
2. Stack the tuna cans in a pyramid formation, using hot glue to secure them in place. Start with three cans at the base, then two in the middle, and one on top.
3. Break the yellow and green crayons into small pieces for easier melting.
4. Melt the crayon pieces using a double boiler or a microwave-safe container. Stir occasionally until fully liquefied.
5. Once melted, add a few drops of citronella essential oil to the wax for insect-repelling properties. Stir well to combine.
6. Place a candle wick with a metal tab in the center of each tuna can, using a wooden skewer to hold it upright. Secure the wick in place by pouring a small amount of melted wax onto the metal tab and allowing it to cool.
7. Carefully pour the remaining melted crayon wax into each can, filling them to the desired height. Adjust the wick as needed to keep it centered.
8. Allow the wax to cool and harden completely before using the candle towers.
Variations & Tips
For a more personalized touch, experiment with different crayon colors to match your outdoor decor, or try layering colors within each can for a striped effect. Consider using different essential oils, such as lavender or eucalyptus, to create varying scents and benefits. For additional stability, use larger cans as the base layer. To enhance the visual appeal, wrap the exterior of the cans with twine or decorative paper before gluing them together.
