Creating textured wall art with paper bags and cardboard is an innovative way to upcycle materials into unique home decor. This project transforms simple paper bags into an artistic statement, adding warmth and personality to any room. The texture and organic feel of the paper bags give the art piece a rustic charm, while the addition of cardboard provides structure and depth. This DIY is perfect for those looking to add a touch of handmade elegance to their living space without breaking the bank.
The finished wall art should be hung in a living room or office setting, preferably on a neutral-colored wall to allow its earthy tones to stand out. Pair it with minimalist furniture to maintain a modern aesthetic, or incorporate it into a bohemian design scheme with plenty of natural elements like wooden furniture and indoor plants. The warm browns and tans of the paper will complement green plants and wooden textures beautifully, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere.
Textured Paper Bag Wall Art
Materials
3 large brown paper bags
1 large piece of cardboard (20x30 inches)
Scissors
Mod Podge or white glue
Paintbrush
Iron
Ruler
Pencil
Picture hanging hardware
Directions
Cut the brown paper bags into large, flat rectangles, trimming off handles and any rigid seams.
Lay a paper bag rectangle flat and gently iron it on a low setting to remove wrinkles, taking care not to scorch the paper.
Using the ruler and pencil, draw various geometric shapes on the paper, such as triangles, squares, and rectangles.
Cut out the drawn shapes carefully using scissors.
Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge or white glue to the cardboard using the paintbrush.
Arrange the paper shapes onto the glued surface of the cardboard, overlapping them to create a textured, layered effect.
Press down on each shape gently to ensure they stick well to the cardboard.
Once all the shapes are arranged and glued, let the piece dry completely.
Attach picture hanging hardware to the back of the cardboard for wall mounting.
Variations & Tips
For a more colorful version, consider painting the paper bag pieces with watercolors before gluing them onto the cardboard. This will add a pop of color and allow for more customization to match specific room decor. Alternatively, experiment with different shapes, such as circles or hexagons, to create a unique pattern. Adding a thin border of metallic paint to each paper shape can also elevate the piece, giving it a subtle, elegant sheen.
