Transforming rusted keys into a charming driftwood wind chime not only breathes new life into forgotten objects but also creates a unique, harmonious decoration for your home. This DIY project is a great way to upcycle and bring a touch of coastal charm indoors. It’s a creative solution for those who love to repurpose materials and appreciate the soothing sounds of wind chimes.
Hang this rustic wind chime near a window where it can catch a gentle breeze, allowing the keys to create soft, melodic sounds. The natural driftwood and weathered keys pair well with coastal or bohemian interior styles. Consider placing it in a living room or a sunroom, where its natural textures can complement neutral or blue-hued decor, evoking a serene seaside atmosphere.

Fishing line, 10 feet
Small eye screws, 5
Scissors
Directions
Clean the driftwood to remove any debris or sand. Allow it to dry completely.
Evenly space the five small eye screws along the bottom of the driftwood, making sure they are securely fastened.
Cut five pieces of fishing line, each about 2 feet long.
Tie one end of each fishing line to a rusted key, ensuring a secure knot.
Attach the other end of each fishing line to an eye screw on the driftwood, adjusting the lengths to create a staggered effect. Trim any excess fishing line.
Tie a longer piece of fishing line to each end of the driftwood to create a hanger. Ensure that it is balanced so that the driftwood hangs horizontally.
Variations & Tips
For a more vibrant look, consider painting the driftwood in a soft pastel color that complements your home decor. Alternatively, you could use different types of keys, such as skeleton keys or vintage keys, to add character. For added auditory interest, mix in small bells or shells between the keys. These variations maintain the core structure of the driftwood wind chime while allowing for personalization to suit different tastes.
