Bubble Wrap Garden Mats
Materials
Thick plastic shipping bubble wrap sheets, approximately 24 x 36 inches
Heat gun or a similar direct heat source
Directions
Lay out several sheets of thick plastic bubble wrap on a flat, heat-resistant surface. Ensure that the bubbles are facing upwards.
Stack the bubble wrap sheets to the desired thickness, typically around 3 to 4 layers for optimal shock absorption.
Using a heat gun, gently apply heat evenly across the surface of the bubble wrap stack. Move the heat gun in circular motions to avoid overheating any one area.
As the plastic begins to melt, press down gently with a flat, heat-resistant object to help bond the layers together. Ensure that the edges are particularly well-bonded to maintain the mat's integrity.
Allow the mat to cool completely. Once cooled, trim any excess plastic around the edges for a neat finish.
Repeat the process for additional mats as needed.
Variations & Tips
For increased durability, consider adding an additional layer of bubble wrap or incorporating a layer of heavy-duty plastic sheeting on the bottom for reinforcement. You could also experiment with different shapes, such as circular or hexagonal mats, to suit different areas of your garden. If desired, use colored bubble wrap for a vibrant, playful look that highlights specific garden features.
