This unique DIY project involves using VHS tape as a creative material for crocheting, transforming something that might otherwise be considered waste into a functional and stylish sun-blocking patio privacy screen. This project not only gives new life to old tapes but also provides an innovative way to add privacy and shade to outdoor spaces. The glossy black film from VHS tapes adds an intriguing texture and sheen, making this screen both practical and visually interesting.
The finished crochet patio privacy screen should be hung or draped along a patio railing or between posts to create a stylish and functional barrier. The glossy black texture adds a modern and slightly industrial touch, complementing outdoor furniture in neutral tones or contrasting with brightly colored decor. It can also be used as a backdrop for plants or outdoor art, adding a striking visual element to any patio or garden setup.
VHS Tape Crochet Patio Privacy Screen

Materials
Unspooled black VHS tape (approximately 2,000 feet)
Crochet hook size 6mm
Two wooden dowels, 1 inch in diameter and 6 feet long
Directions
1. Begin by tying a slip knot with the VHS tape and placing it onto the 6mm crochet hook.
2. Chain 150 stitches. This will be the width of your privacy screen.
3. Turn your work and single crochet into the second chain from the hook. Single crochet across the entire row. You should have 149 single crochet stitches.
4. At the end of the row, chain 1 and turn your work.
5. Continue working in rows of single crochet until your piece measures 5 feet in height. Remember to chain 1 at the end of each row before turning.
6. Once your piece reaches the desired height, fasten off by pulling the tape through the last loop on your hook.
7. Weave in any loose ends using a tapestry needle.
8. Lay out your crochet piece and place one wooden dowel at the top and one at the bottom. Fold the top edge over the top dowel and secure it by stitching it down using the VHS tape and a tapestry needle.
9. Repeat with the bottom dowel to add weight and structure to the bottom of the screen.
10. Your VHS tape crochet privacy screen is now ready to be hung or mounted.

Variations & Tips
To vary the project, consider using different types of tape or ribbon for different textures and colors. For example, metallic ribbon or colored cassette tape can add a pop of color. Adjust the size by chaining more or fewer stitches for the width and more or fewer rows for the height. You can also experiment with different crochet stitches, such as double crochet or half-double crochet, to change the density and appearance of the screen while maintaining its core functionality.
