Crocheting offers a unique way to upcycle everyday items into beautiful home decor. This DIY project transforms a large glass pickle jar into an elegant outdoor lantern using thick natural hemp cord. By wrapping the jar in a rustic crochet pattern, you create a charming and functional piece that provides ambient lighting for a patio or garden. This project not only repurposes a common household item but also adds an eco-friendly touch to your outdoor living space.
The finished crochet lantern is perfect for hanging in an outdoor space like a patio or garden. The natural hemp cord provides a rustic, bohemian look that pairs well with wooden or metal outdoor furniture. The lantern can be styled with a small LED candle placed inside for a warm glow. Consider grouping multiple lanterns at different heights for a layered lighting effect. The neutral color of the hemp cord allows it to blend seamlessly into both lush garden settings and minimalist urban balconies.
Crochet Hemp Cord Outdoor Lantern
Materials
1 large glass pickle jar (from Costco or similar, approximately 1 gallon size)
Natural hemp cord, 5mm thickness, approximately 100 yards
Crochet hook, size 6mm
Scissors
Tapestry needle
Twisted wire for handle, approximately 3 feet
LED candle (optional)
Directions
1. Begin by making a slip knot and attaching the hemp cord to your 6mm crochet hook.
2. Chain enough to wrap around the bottom edge of the jar snugly, then join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
3. Round 1: Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch around, join with slip stitch to first single crochet.
4. Round 2: Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet), double crochet in each stitch around, join with slip stitch to top of chain 3.
5. Repeat Round 2 until the crocheted portion reaches the desired height, approximately 3/4 of the jar's height.
6. Once at the desired height, create a series of chain loops to form the top edging by chaining 5, skip 2 stitches, and slip stitch into the next stitch. Repeat around.
7. Fasten off and weave in ends using a tapestry needle.
8. To create the handle, twist the wire into a loop that fits around the neck of the jar and create a handle by twisting the wire ends together securely.
9. Slide the wire loop around the neck of the jar and position the handle as desired.
10. Place an LED candle inside the jar for lighting.
Variations & Tips
For variations, consider using jute or sisal cord for a slightly different texture. Experiment with dyeing the hemp cord in natural colors like indigo or turmeric for a custom look. You can also adjust the size of the jar and the length of the crochet pattern to create a series of lanterns in varying heights. If you prefer a different crochet pattern, try incorporating a mesh or lattice stitch for an airier design that allows more light to shine through.
