This project is perfect for anyone looking to add a personal touch to their outdoor space with minimal investment and effort.
Place these grooved columns alongside garden paths, flanking a driveway, or as supports for an outdoor pergola. Inverted Disc Cement Yard Columns
Materials
10 plastic flying discs (brightly colored, 10-inch diameter)
30 pounds of quick-setting concrete mix
Water (as per concrete mix instructions)
2 wooden dowels (each 4 feet long, 1-inch diameter)
Trowel
Bucket for mixing concrete
Directions
Begin by mixing the quick-setting concrete in a bucket according to the package instructions. Ensure the mixture is thick but pourable.
Lay out the plastic flying discs on a flat surface, inverted so the concave side faces upwards.
Pour a generous amount of the wet concrete into each disc, filling them halfway.
Insert a wooden dowel into the center of the first disc and ensure it stands upright and centered. The dowel will serve as a support and alignment guide.
Carefully stack the next disc on top of the first, ensuring it is centered around the dowel and pressing down slightly to secure it in the concrete. Continue filling each subsequent disc with concrete and stacking them until all discs are used.
Allow the concrete to set and cure as per the concrete package instructions. This will usually take 24-48 hours.
Once fully set, gently remove the column from the surface and position it in its designated spot in your yard. Repeat the process to create additional columns as needed.
Variations & Tips
To customize your yard columns further, consider using metallic spray paint to coat the finished columns for a sleek, modern look. Alternatively, you can add decorative stones or glass beads to the wet concrete for added texture and sparkle. For a more natural appearance, use discs in earthy tones and allow moss or climbing plants to grow around the columns, integrating them seamlessly into a lush garden environment.
