I love a patio project that looks high-end but comes together with the kind of supplies you can grab on a quick errand run. This lantern is exactly that: a plain glass cylinder vase gets a dramatic upgrade with metallic gold zip ties wrapped all the way around it, creating a sculptural little glow piece that looks far more expensive than it is. If you like outdoor décor that feels a bit polished without requiring power tools or a full Saturday, this one is worth trying.

As someone who is usually squeezing creative projects in between work deadlines and figuring out dinner, I really appreciate DIYs that are low commitment but still give that satisfying before-and-after moment. I’d use this lantern on a patio table, along porch steps, or grouped with a few others for an easy party setup. It’s especially great for beginners because the technique is simple, forgiving, and surprisingly striking once the candle is lit inside.

Materials

60 clear plastic zip ties, 8 inches long, standard width

1 plain clear glass cylinder vase, 6 inches tall x 4 inches diameter
1 can metallic gold spray paint, 10 to 12 ounces
1 LED pillar candle or flameless votive, 3 to 4 inches tall
1 piece cardboard or drop cloth, at least 24 x 24 inches
1 pair disposable gloves
1 pair scissors

Instructions

1. Cover your work surface with cardboard or a drop cloth and put on gloves; work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area before you open the spray paint.

2. Lay all 60 clear zip ties flat in a single layer, leaving a little space between them so the paint can reach the edges evenly.

3. Spray the zip ties with a light coat of metallic gold paint from about 8 to 10 inches away, using smooth passes instead of heavy bursts to avoid drips.

4. Let the first coat dry according to the paint can directions, then flip the zip ties and spray the other side with another light, even coat.

5. If needed, add one more light coat for fuller coverage, then let the zip ties dry completely until they no longer feel tacky.

6. Once the paint is dry, wrap one zip tie around the vase near the bottom edge and fasten it snugly so it sits flat against the glass without wobbling.

7. Continue fastening the rest of the zip ties around the vase vertically, placing them side by side so the locking ends line up neatly near the top rim.

8. Adjust the spacing as you go so the zip ties form an even ring around the vase, then tighten each one just enough to hold securely without stressing the glass.

9. Trim the excess tails from all the zip ties with scissors, cutting as close to the locking heads as you can for a cleaner, more finished look.

10. Place a flameless candle inside the vase and set the lantern on your patio table, porch, or outdoor shelf where the gold finish can catch the evening light.

Variations & Tips

Color swap: Try matte black, bronze, or champagne gold spray paint if you want the lantern to match different patio furniture or planters.

Candle choice: I strongly prefer a flameless candle for this project, especially outdoors, because the zip ties are plastic and I don’t want heat anywhere near them.

Vase sizing: If you use a taller or wider cylinder vase, simply buy longer zip ties and increase the quantity so the vase still looks full and evenly covered.

Neater finish: Keep all of the locking heads aligned at the same height before fully tightening; that one small detail makes the finished lantern look much more intentional.

Party setup tip: Make three in slightly different heights and cluster them together. As someone who’s always thinking about easy entertaining, I can say a grouped display gives you the biggest impact for very little extra effort.

Outdoor durability: If your lantern will live outside regularly, use a spray paint labeled for plastic and outdoor use for better adhesion and longer-lasting color.
