These patriotic outdoor light covers are one of those simple projects that look far fancier than the supply list would suggest. By melting flattened red and blue plastic cups and pairing them with two everyday household items, you can make glowing covers that add a festive red, white, and blue touch to a porch, patio, fence, or backyard gathering space.
I love projects like this because they’re budget-friendly, easy to batch-make, and cheerful enough for summer holidays, cookouts, and family evenings outside. If you like decorating with things you can actually find around the house, this is a very approachable afternoon craft.
Materials
Instructions
1. Preheat your oven to 250°F and line two baking sheets with the parchment paper. Set the LED light strand aside well away from the oven.
2. Cut down one side of each plastic cup with scissors, then cut away the bottom so each cup opens into a flat sheet. Press each piece gently with your hands so it lies as flat as possible.
3. Arrange the flattened plastic pieces on the parchment-lined baking sheets, leaving a little space between them. Bake for 2 to 4 minutes, just until the plastic softens and flattens more fully.
4. Remove the trays carefully and let the plastic cool completely for 5 to 10 minutes. Once cool, peel the red and blue plastic sheets off the parchment.
5. Use scissors to trim each melted piece into a rough circle or petal-edged round about 3 to 4 inches wide. Don’t worry about making them perfectly even; the handmade shape gives the light covers charm.
6. Snip a small X in the center of each plastic round, just large enough for one LED bulb to push through snugly. Test one light first so you don’t cut the opening too large.
7. Push one LED bulb through the center slit of each red or blue piece until the plastic rests against the light socket. Alternate colors along the strand for a balanced patriotic look.
8. Spread the finished light strand out on a table and adjust the covers so they face forward and sit evenly. If any piece looks too large or uneven, trim it slightly with scissors.
9. Hang the lights on a covered porch railing, around a deck, or along an outdoor backdrop, and switch them on once everything is in place. The melted plastic catches the light beautifully and gives off a soft, festive glow.
Variations & Tips
For a white accent: If you want more of that classic red, white, and blue look, leave every third bulb uncovered so the plain white LED shows between the colored covers.
For picky decorators: In my house, somebody always likes things a little less bold, so you can use more blue than red or cluster one color on each end for a softer look.
For safer outdoor use: Stick with cool-running LED string lights only. Traditional hot bulbs can warp the plastic over time and are not worth the risk.
For easier shaping: If the plastic curls too much after baking, place another sheet of parchment on top and press gently with a book once it is warm, not hot.
For holiday versatility: The same method works with different cup colors for other occasions, too—orange and purple for fall, or green and red for winter gatherings.
For storage: Coil the string lights loosely and lay the covers flat when packing them away so the plastic pieces don’t crease before next season.
