There’s something about a big cheerful front-door decoration that makes a house feel friendly before anyone even steps inside, and this giant summer popsicle hanger does exactly that. Using simple Dollar Store sponges and a tall wooden board, you can make a bright, playful piece that looks a little nostalgic, a little whimsical, and just plain happy on a porch in the summertime.
I’m especially fond of projects like this because they remind me of the kind of make-do creativity folks have always had around here in the Midwest—turning ordinary things into something memorable. If you want an easy outdoor décor project with bold color and plenty of personality, this one is beginner-friendly and satisfying to put together.
Materials
Instructions
1. Lightly sand the front edges of the wooden board, then wipe away dust with a clean rag so the glue and paint will hold properly.
2. Paint the bottom 7 to 8 inches of the board in tan or brown to resemble a popsicle stick, and let it dry completely.
3. Lay all 30 sponges on the board without glue first, arranging them in 5 rows of 6 sponges to cover the top portion and form the popsicle body.
4. Mix the sponge colors as you go for a striped or confetti effect, and leave a clean centered border at the bottom so the painted “stick” remains visible.
5. Mark light guide lines with pencil so you can keep the rows straight when you begin gluing.
6. Working one sponge at a time, apply construction adhesive to the back and add a little hot glue at the corners for instant hold, then press it firmly onto the board.
7. Continue gluing each sponge row by row, keeping the edges snug and even so the finished hanger looks full and tidy.
8. After all 30 sponges are attached, press across the surface gently to level any uneven pieces and let the adhesive cure according to the package directions.
9. Spray the entire front lightly with a clear outdoor sealer, using two thin coats to help protect the sponges from porch moisture and fading.
10. Attach two D-rings to the back near the top corners or install one heavy-duty sawtooth hanger at the top center.
11. Tie a 12- to 16-inch length of jute twine between the D-rings if you want a softer rustic hanger, then check that it hangs evenly before placing it on your door.
12. Hang the finished giant popsicle on a covered front door or porch wall where the colors can be enjoyed all summer long.
Variations & Tips
Pastel version: Use only soft pink, mint, yellow, and aqua sponges for a sweeter ice-cream-parlor look that works beautifully on a white or black door.
Patriotic version: Arrange red, white, and blue sponges in simple bands for a festive decoration that carries you from Memorial Day through the Fourth of July.
Weather tip: This project lasts best on a covered porch or storm door area since sponges can hold water in heavy rain.
Glue tip: I like using both construction adhesive and hot glue together—the hot glue grabs right away, while the stronger adhesive keeps everything in place for the long haul.
Neater edges: If your sponges vary slightly in size, place the most even ones around the outside rows and save the less uniform ones for the center.
Make it larger: For an even more dramatic statement, use a 12 x 40 inch board and space the sponge rows a touch wider while keeping the popsicle-stick section at the bottom visible.
Door safety: Before hanging, make sure the finished piece doesn’t block your storm door from closing and that the hanger hardware is rated for the project’s weight.
