I’m always looking for a way to turn the random odds and ends I’ve been meaning to throw out into something fun for the porch, especially once summer rolls around and everything starts leaning red, white, and blue. This project takes broken plastic hangers in patriotic colors and melts them into decorative hanging basket accents that look surprisingly polished once they’re assembled outdoors.

If you like upcycling but don’t want a project that eats up your whole weekend, this one is a great fit. It uses just a few supplies beyond the hangers, comes together in a small batch of three, and makes a cute statement on a front porch, fence, or patio. I especially love projects like this because they feel festive without needing a trip to the craft store for a cart full of extras.

Materials

Broken red plastic hangers, 6 to 8 standard plastic hangers

Broken white plastic hangers, 6 to 8 standard plastic hangers
Broken blue plastic hangers, 6 to 8 standard plastic hangers
Wire hanging baskets with coco liners, 3 baskets, 10-inch diameter each
Silver jack chain or hanging chain, 9 feet total, cut into three 3-foot lengths
S-hooks or basket hooks, 6 total

Instructions

1. Sort the broken hangers by color and wipe them clean so dirt, dust, and stickers won’t interfere once the plastic is melted and shaped.

2. Break or cut the hangers into small, fairly even pieces about 1 to 2 inches wide so they melt more consistently and are easier to arrange by color.

3. Working one color at a time, melt and fuse the plastic pieces in a heat-safe mold or on a lined, heat-safe surface until you can form a single decorative disc or panel for each basket; make three pieces total, roughly 6 to 8 inches wide each.

4. Let the melted plastic pieces cool completely, then trim or smooth any overly sharp edges so they’re safe to handle and won’t snag the basket liners.

5. Attach one cooled plastic panel to the front of each wire hanging basket, securing it firmly through the basket wires so the patriotic color is visible from the front.

6. Cut the chain into three equal hanging lengths if it isn’t pre-cut, then connect each basket securely with hooks so all three hang at a similar height.

7. Hang the baskets on a porch hook, fence bracket, or pergola beam and adjust the front panels so they face outward and show off the red, white, and blue pattern.

8. Add your favorite outdoor plants or faux greenery to each basket, keeping the weight balanced so the baskets hang evenly and don’t twist.

Variations & Tips

Star shape option: Instead of simple round or oval panels, shape the melted plastic into stars before cooling for an even more obvious patriotic look.

Plant choice: I like using trailing white flowers, deep green foliage, or even small red blooms so the basket itself doesn’t compete with the hanger design.

Weather tip: Hang these in a covered outdoor area if possible, since constant direct sun and extreme heat can soften some plastics over time.

Make-ahead idea: You can melt and form the decorative pieces ahead of time, then attach them to baskets later when you’re ready to decorate for Memorial Day or the Fourth of July.

Safety reminder: Melt plastic only with proper ventilation and the right heat-safe setup, since fumes and overheating can become a problem fast.

Color layout: For a cleaner look, keep one basket mostly red, one mostly white, and one mostly blue; for a more playful style, marble all three colors together in each panel.
