This little lantern sleeve starts with one of my favorite kinds of supplies: a humble dollar store plastic mesh pencil cup and a few colors of cotton yarn. By crocheting directly through the mesh, you get a sturdy red, white, and blue cover that looks cheerful during the day and absolutely glows when you slip a battery candle or solar light inside at night.

I love projects like this because they feel approachable even if you are not an advanced crocheter. If you can make a simple stitch and enjoy a relaxing evening with yarn in your hands, you can make this. It is especially sweet for summer cookouts, porch decorating, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, or any backyard supper where you want the table to feel a little extra special for family and friends.

Materials

1 plastic mesh pencil cup holder, approximately 4 inches wide x 4 inches tall

35 yards red worsted-weight cotton yarn
20 yards white worsted-weight cotton yarn
35 yards blue worsted-weight cotton yarn
1 size G/6 (4.0 mm) crochet hook
1 blunt tapestry needle
1 pair sharp craft scissors
4 small binder clips or clothespins
1 flameless LED tealight or 1 small solar puck light, about 2 to 3 inches wide

Instructions

1. Check the pencil cup for rough plastic edges, and trim any snags with scissors so the yarn will slide through cleanly.

2. Decide which side will be the front, then clip the yarn tails at the rim with binder clips so your color changes stay tidy as you work.

3. Starting at the bottom row of mesh holes, join blue yarn with a slip knot and work one single crochet through each opening around the cup to create a solid foundation round.

4. Continue working blue single crochet stitches through the mesh for the first 4 rows, keeping the tension snug but not tight so the cup holds its shape.

5. Switch to white yarn by fastening off the blue on the inside and joining the white in the next hole, then crochet 2 full rows of white around the cup.

6. Change to red yarn and crochet 2 rows, making sure the stitches sit evenly so the stripe line looks crisp.

7. Repeat the white and red stripe sequence until you reach the top, ending with red if your cup height allows for an even final band.

8. At the top edge, work one final round in red or blue single crochet, placing one stitch in each top mesh opening to give the rim a finished look.

9. Cut the yarn, thread the tails onto a tapestry needle, and weave every end to the inside of the sleeve so nothing shows from the outside.

10. Slip a flameless LED tealight or small solar puck light into the center of the cup, then test the glow in a dim room and adjust the sleeve so the stripes sit straight.

Variations & Tips

For picky decorators: If bold stripes feel too busy for your space, use mostly blue with just a narrow white and red band near the top. It still feels patriotic but a little calmer on the table.

Yarn choice: I strongly prefer cotton yarn for this project because it holds its shape nicely and gives a clean stitch definition through the plastic mesh. Skip fuzzy yarns, because they can hide the pattern and catch on the edges.

Lighting tip: Always use a flameless candle or solar light instead of a real flame. This is one of those mama reminders I cannot help giving, especially if little hands will be helping decorate.

Make it a set: I like making three lanterns in slightly different stripe layouts for a picnic table centerpiece. Grouped together, they look thoughtful and homemade without being fussy.

Easy sizing fix: If your pencil cup is shorter or taller than mine, keep the same idea and simply adjust the number of stripe rows. The prettiest result comes from keeping each color band the same height all the way around.

Finishing neatly: Weaving in ends as you go saves frustration later. I learned that the hard way after making a few family cookout decorations and leaving the tail cleanup until the very end.
