There is something about oversized candy decorations in a yard that makes everybody smile, and these giant backyard lollipops do exactly that. I’ve always had a soft spot for cheerful outdoor decorations that look a little whimsical without being hard to make, and this project is one of those happy ideas that turns simple pool noodles and PVC pipe into something that looks fit for a county fair or a child’s storybook.
If you want a fun weekend project for a party, summer decorating, a candy-themed display, or even a playful holiday yard scene, this is a good one for beginners. The steps are straightforward, the supplies are easy to find, and the finished lollipops are lightweight enough to move around while still making a big, bright statement in the yard.
Materials
6 foam pool noodles, 2.5 to 3 inches thick and about 52 to 55 inches long, in 6 bright colors
Instructions
1. Wipe the pool noodles and PVC pipes clean and let them dry fully so the glue and tape will stick well.
2. Pair the pool noodles by color combinations, using 2 noodles for each lollipop so you will end up with 3 finished lollipops.
3. If any noodle has a thin plastic covering that feels slick or loose, peel it away so you are gluing directly to the foam.
4. Start with one pool noodle and curl one end inward to form the center spiral, adding hot glue every 3 to 4 inches as you coil it tightly.
5. Keep coiling the first noodle into a flat round disk, pressing each loop snugly against the last until you reach the end.
6. Glue the second noodle to the end of the first and continue the spiral to make a larger lollipop top about 20 to 24 inches across.
7. Wrap a few short pieces of clear packing tape across the back of the spiral to help hold the shape while the glue cools and sets.
8. Repeat the same coiling and gluing process with the remaining 4 pool noodles to create 2 more large spiral candy tops.
9. Lay one spiral face down and center the top end of a PVC pipe on the back, placing it so the pipe extends straight down like a lollipop stick.
10. Apply a generous bead of hot glue where the pipe meets the foam, then secure that joint with several strips of white duct tape pressed firmly across the pipe and onto the back of the spiral.
11. For extra durability outdoors, add construction adhesive around the pipe contact point on the back before taping, then let it cure as directed on the bottle.
12. Attach the other 2 spirals to the remaining PVC pipes the same way, checking that each candy top sits centered and straight.
13. Choose the spots in your yard and push or hammer one rebar stake into the ground at each location, leaving about 12 to 18 inches above ground.
14. Slide each PVC pipe over a rebar stake so the lollipop stands upright, then turn the candy top to face the best angle toward the street or walkway.
15. Press the soil firmly around each stake and space the lollipops evenly so the colors and spirals can really show off from a distance.
16. If your area gets wind, add one more strip of white duct tape at the back connection after the lollipops are standing, and check them again after a day outdoors.
Variations & Tips
Color pairing: I like pairing two strong colors in each spiral, such as pink and yellow, blue and green, or orange and purple, because the finished yard display looks lively without feeling cluttered.
For party decor: These are wonderful for birthday parties, school carnivals, and baby shower backdrops. You can cluster all 3 together near an entry path for the biggest impact.
Make them taller: If you want more height, use 6-foot PVC pipes instead of 5-foot ones, but be sure to use longer rebar stakes for stability.
Adhesive tip: Hot glue works quickly, but on warm days I have found that adding a foam-safe construction adhesive gives the back connection a little more staying power outdoors.
Weather note: These hold up best in fair weather or for temporary seasonal displays. If a big windstorm is coming through, I would bring them into the garage or lay them down until the weather settles.
Neat finish: If the center of your spiral looks uneven, tuck in a small glued foam circle cut from a noodle scrap. It gives the lollipop a cleaner, more polished middle.
Yard placement: I think they look sweetest near a flower bed, fence line, or mailbox where the white pipes can blend into the background and let the bright spirals be the stars.
