I love a door decoration that looks cheerful from the street and uses things I already have tucked away in the pantry or recycling bin. This giant patriotic Uncle Sam hat front door hanger is made with three empty metal coffee cans and a wide round serving tray, and once it is painted and assembled, it turns into a bold red, white, and blue piece that is perfect for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, or any summer gathering when you want your front porch to feel festive.
This is a great project for anyone who likes easy upcycling and big visual impact without a lot of complicated steps. I’m especially fond of crafts like this because they come together in an afternoon, and they make the front door feel just as dressed up as the table inside when family and friends come by.
Materials
Instructions
1. Wash the coffee cans with warm soapy water, remove any paper labels, and dry them completely. Wipe the tray clean so the paint and glue will stick well.
2. Lightly sand the outside of all three cans and the front of the serving tray to dull the surface. Brush away the dust, then apply a thin coat of primer and let it dry fully.
3. Paint one can red, one can white, and one can red again so the three cans read like the striped crown of an Uncle Sam hat. Apply two thin coats to each can, letting the first coat dry before adding the second.
4. Paint the serving tray blue if it is not already blue, covering the front and outer rim for a finished look. Let it dry, then add a second coat for an even, bold background.
5. Add white stars to the blue tray, spacing them mostly around the upper half and sides so the tray looks like the brim of a patriotic hat. Use painted wooden stars, stickers, or hand-painted stars, then let everything dry.
6. Arrange the three cans across the center of the tray in a straight horizontal row, with the white can in the middle and the red cans on each side. Shift them until the spacing looks even and the tray still shows around the edges like a hat brim.
7. Glue the cans to the tray one at a time, pressing each can down firmly and holding it in place for several seconds. Let the adhesive cure completely according to the package directions before moving the piece.
8. Turn the tray over and attach the ribbon loop to the back top edge with strong glue, then reinforce it with twine or floral wire for extra support. Add felt pads or small felt scraps to the back where needed so the hanger sits nicely against the door.
9. Spray the front with a clear outdoor sealer in light coats and let it dry fully in a well-ventilated area. Once dry, hang it on your front door and adjust the ribbon so the hat sits level.
Variations & Tips
Add a bow: If you like a fuller look, glue a red gingham or striped bow at the base of the center can. I think this makes it feel extra welcoming, especially if you enjoy a porch that looks dressed up for company.
Make it lighter: If your serving tray is very heavy, swap it for a lightweight round pizza pan or wood circle in the same size. It will be easier to hang and may hold better with standard door hooks.
Use outdoor paint: If your front door gets direct sun or rain, choose outdoor craft paint and outdoor adhesive from the start. That little upgrade helps the colors stay crisp through the whole season.
Keep the stars simple: For a kid-friendly shortcut, use pre-made wooden stars or peel-and-stick stars instead of hand painting them. That saves time and still gives you a clean patriotic finish.
Check balance before hanging: Before the glue is fully set, lift the project gently to make sure the weight feels even. I always do this with larger door pieces because it is much easier to fix the placement now than after everything cures hard.
Try picky-decorator friendly colors: If bright primary shades are not your family’s favorite, use softer navy, cream, and barn red for a vintage look. You still get the patriotic feel, just with a more relaxed farmhouse style.
