The soil itself was decent but not lab-tested this season, which is important to mention. It’s a raised bed I’ve been improving for 4 years with compost, shredded leaves, and occasional organic fertilizer. The pH last time I tested, which was the previous fall, was about 6.6. So while the crushed Tums and powdered milk may have contributed calcium, I strongly suspect the improved watering routine did at least half the work.

9. The possible science behind the results

Calcium carbonate from antacids is not instantly available to plants the way some water-soluble fertilizers are. It breaks down gradually, and how useful it is depends on soil acidity, moisture, and microbial activity. Powdered milk can also decompose in the soil, though it is not a concentrated fertilizer and shouldn’t be treated like one.

My best guess is that this mix may have given a small, slow calcium boost in the root zone at a time when the plants were under stress. In a bed that was already close to balanced, that small boost may have been enough to help new fruit develop more evenly. But if your garden has severe nutrient issues, compacted soil, or wildly inconsistent watering, this trick alone probably won’t do much.

10. Downsides and risks I noticed

The main downside is that it’s easy to overestimate what this kind of home remedy can do. If you dump too much powdered milk into a small area, it can smell sour as it breaks down, especially in wet, hot weather. I kept my amount modest, and I didn’t have a strong odor problem, but I could see it becoming unpleasant if someone used 1 or 2 cups per plant.

There’s also the question of soil balance. Too much calcium can interfere with the uptake of other nutrients over time, and random amendments without a soil test can create new problems while trying to fix an old one. I wouldn’t make this a weekly habit, and I definitely wouldn’t scatter antacids all over the garden just because one social media post said to.

11. Which tomatoes seemed to benefit the most

In my bed, the larger heirloom varieties seemed like the most likely candidates to benefit. The Brandywine and Cherokee Purple plants, which tend to produce big, heavy fruit and are usually the first to show stress-related issues, were the ones I watched most carefully. They were also the ones where reduced blossom end rot mattered the most, because losing even 2 or 3 fruits on a large heirloom plant feels significant.

The Green Zebra, which stayed untreated, was less useful as a comparison because smaller-fruited tomatoes often handle stress a little better. If I repeat this next year, I’ll probably reserve any calcium-related experiment for my largest slicing tomatoes rather than paste or salad varieties.

Next time, I’d be more controlled about the test. I’d label each plant, count blossoms and fruit set from the start, and take weekly photos from the same angle. I’d also apply the mixture earlier, probably when the plants begin flowering instead of waiting until mid-to-late July when stress symptoms are already appearing.

I would also reduce the powdered milk slightly, maybe using 4 crushed tablets plus 2 to 3 tablespoons of powdered milk per plant rather than eyeballing a larger handful. That feels more practical for a suburban backyard garden like mine, especially if you’re growing in raised beds where amendments are concentrated in a smaller volume of soil.

13. Better long-term fixes if blossom end rot is your real problem

If blossom end rot keeps showing up year after year, I would start with the basics before reaching for expired pantry items. First, test your soil. A basic soil test through a local extension office is often $15 to $30, and it gives much better guidance than guessing. You’ll find out pH, calcium levels, and whether your fertilizer routine is too heavy on nitrogen.

Second, focus on steady moisture. Tomatoes generally do best with about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, more during extreme heat or in fast-draining raised beds. Third, mulch consistently. A 2- to 3-inch mulch layer can make a huge difference in preventing the dry-soaked-dry cycle that triggers fruit problems. In my experience, these three steps matter more than any single home amendment.

14. Would I recommend trying it?

Yes, but with realistic expectations. If you already have expired antacids and a little powdered milk you were going to toss, using a small amount around a few tomato plants is a reasonable low-cost experiment. My total material cost was essentially zero because I used what I already had, and the application took less than 10 minutes for 3 plants.

But I would only recommend it as a minor supplement, not a replacement for proper garden care. Don’t use it to avoid fixing irrigation, skip soil testing, or rescue severely stressed plants. Think of it as one small nudge that might help, especially with large heirlooms in midsummer.

15. My bottom line after 3 weeks

Three weeks after burying crushed expired Tums mixed with dry powdered milk around my July heirloom tomatoes, I saw a modest improvement in new fruit quality and fewer signs of blossom end rot on the treated plants. I did not see a miracle growth spurt, bumper-crop effect, or overnight dark-green foliage transformation.

Still, I’d call the experiment worthwhile. In the middle of a busy work season, when I’m trying to keep my garden productive without turning every weekend into a full landscaping project, I appreciate simple, low-effort tweaks that may give me even a small edge. This one didn’t change everything, but it seemed to help a little, and in tomato season, sometimes a little help is all I’m after.
