3. Tear off a sheet of aluminum foil about 13 x 18 inches and lay it smoothly over the arranged protractors. The foil helps distribute heat and keeps the plastic from curling too dramatically as it softens.
4. Bake the covered protractors for 6 to 8 minutes, watching through the oven window until the plastic looks glossy and slightly slumped. Remove the tray carefully as soon as the pieces soften but before any browning starts.
5. Place the second flat tray on top of the foil-covered plastic and press gently and evenly for 20 to 30 seconds to flatten the sheet. Let it cool for 10 minutes before lifting away the foil and parchment.
6. Repeat the same baking and pressing process with the remaining 12 protractors to make a second pane if your greenhouse frame needs a pair of matching inserts. If you only need one pane, save the extra protractors for patch panels or vent covers.
7. Once the pane is cool, use a metal ruler and fine-tip marker to mark the exact size of your frame opening. Trim the edges with a craft knife on a cutting mat, using several light passes for a cleaner edge.
8. Dry-fit the trimmed pane into the wood frame or greenhouse sash opening and make any small adjustments to the edges. It should sit flat with a little room for adhesive around the perimeter.
9. Run a thin bead of clear exterior-grade silicone adhesive around the frame opening and press the pane into place. Use 8 small binder clips around the edges, if needed, to hold it steady while the silicone sets.
10. Let the adhesive cure according to the package directions, usually 24 hours, before moving the frame outdoors or exposing it to moisture. Once cured, the pane is ready to use on a mini greenhouse, cold frame lid, or seed-starting cabinet door.
Variations & Tips
For small greenhouses: This works best for compact frames, cabinet-style greenhouse doors, and cold frames rather than large wall panels. Smaller panes stay flatter and are easier to secure well.
