Materials

8 synthetic plastic wine corks, standard size about 1 3/4 inches long each

16 galvanized steel washers, 1 1/4-inch outer diameter with 1/4-inch center hole
4 rubber pads, 2 inches x 2 inches, about 1/8 inch thick

Instructions

1. Bring a medium pot of water to a gentle boil and add the 8 synthetic corks for 8 to 10 minutes until they soften slightly but still hold their shape.

2. Remove the corks carefully with tongs, set them on a towel, and let them cool just enough to handle without burning your fingers.

3. While the corks are still warm and pliable, press each one gently on its side to flatten it a bit so it forms a broader cushion, aiming for about 1 1/4 inches tall.

4. Stack 2 corks together for each shock absorber, lining them up so the flatter sides sit evenly and create a thicker support pad.

5. Place 1 rubber pad on your work surface and center 2 stacked corks on top of it to make the first absorber unit.

6. Set 2 washers on top of the cork stack and 2 washers underneath the rubber pad, aligning them so the pressure will spread evenly when the absorber is used under equipment.

7. Repeat the same arrangement to make 3 more absorber units, using all 8 corks, 16 washers, and 4 rubber pads.

8. Let the finished units rest for 1 hour so the corks cool completely and firm back up in their new shape.

9. Slide one absorber under each corner of the equipment or object you want to cushion, with the rubber pad against the floor or shelf surface for grip.

10. Test for wobble or vibration, then adjust the placement so the weight is centered over each absorber and the load sits level.

Variations & Tips

For heavier equipment: Use denser synthetic corks and double the rubber pad thickness to give the absorber more grip and a little extra resilience under weight.

For small appliances: These work nicely under a washing machine, tabletop grinder, air compressor, or storage rack, but I always test them first with a gentle push to make sure everything sits steady.

For better height matching: If one corner of the equipment sits lower than the others, shave a little off a cork with a sharp utility knife after it has cooled completely, trimming in tiny amounts.

Washer choice: Wide washers do a better job than narrow ones because they spread pressure across the cork and help prevent dents from forming too quickly.

Boiling tip: Do not overboil the synthetic corks; if they get too soft, they can deform unevenly and become harder to stack neatly.

Floor protection: If you are setting these on painted wood or finished flooring, add a thin scrap of shelf liner under each unit to keep things from sliding and to protect the surface.
