There’s something about back-to-school season that still tugs at my heart. Even now, I can picture fresh pencils on the kitchen table, new shoes by the door, and my children heading off with sleepy eyes and clean lunch boxes. This giant crayon front door hanger has that same cheerful feeling, and the best part is that it comes together from two surprisingly simple items: a thick pink yoga mat and a pink plastic traffic cone.
If you want a porch decoration that’s bold, playful, and easy to spot from the road, this is a good one to make. I especially like it for teachers, grandparents, and families who enjoy decorating for the school year without spending a fortune on store-bought pieces. It looks whimsical, holds up nicely outdoors for the season, and gives your front door that bright “school is back in session” charm.
Materials
1 thick pink yoga mat, about 1/2 inch thick and 24 x 68 inches
Instructions
1. Unroll the pink yoga mat and lay it flat so it can relax for a few minutes. If it curls badly, place a few books on the corners to help flatten it.
2. Roll the yoga mat tightly from one short end to the other to form the crayon body. Test the roll inside the wide opening of the pink traffic cone and adjust the tightness until it slides in snugly.
3. When the fit looks right, add a line of hot glue along the final edge of the yoga mat and press it closed. Hold it in place for a few seconds so the rolled shape stays firm.
4. Insert one end of the rolled mat into the wide opening of the pink traffic cone. Push it down far enough that the cone and mat meet cleanly and look like one long crayon shape.
5. Run hot glue around the seam where the yoga mat meets the cone to secure the two pieces together. If the cone feels loose, tuck a small piece of cardboard inside the opening before gluing for extra support.
6. Cut a band of black craft foam long enough to wrap around the crayon near the lower third of the yoga mat roll. Glue it in place smoothly so it looks like the paper band on a real crayon.
7. Cut a second, narrower black band and glue it about 1 inch above the first band for a finished crayon look. Keep the bands straight by measuring around the roll before gluing.
8. Cut a rectangle of tan craft foam to fit between the black bands if you want the classic crayon label area. Glue it neatly in the center, smoothing it with your hands as you go.
9. Cut white vinyl or cardstock letters for a name, school word, or simple phrase like “WELCOME” or “SCHOOL.” Glue or stick the letters onto the tan panel or directly onto the pink body.
10. Turn the crayon over and attach the jute rope or ribbon to the back near the top with plenty of hot glue. Let the glue cool fully before lifting, and add an extra patch of craft foam over the ends of the hanger for reinforcement if needed.
11. Check the front for any gaps, loose edges, or stray glue strings, and trim or reglue where needed. If you like, use the marker to add simple accent lines around the label area for more definition.
12. Hang the finished crayon on your front door or porch wall where it can be seen easily. Step back and straighten it so the point faces down and the whole piece reads like an oversized school crayon.
Variations & Tips
Make it any color: If pink isn’t your style, this same method works with red, blue, green, yellow, or purple materials. A bright primary color gives it that classic school-supply look.
Add a teacher name: One of my favorite versions is personalizing the crayon with a teacher’s last name for classroom or front porch decor. It makes the project feel extra thoughtful without much extra work.
Use outdoor-safe glue when needed: If your porch gets a lot of heat or sun, reinforce key seams with a stronger outdoor adhesive in addition to hot glue. That little extra effort can help it last through the whole season.
Keep the cone proportionate: A smaller cone gives you a cute, chunky crayon, while a taller cone creates a longer point. Before gluing, I always dry fit the pieces and look at the shape from a few steps back.
Add ribbon or greenery: A simple bow, some faux greenery, or even a little apple accent can dress it up for the first week of school. I’d keep the extras light so the crayon remains the star of the porch.
Store it flat and dry: At the end of the season, hang it in a closet or slide it under a guest bed if you have the room. Keeping it out of damp weather will help the foam and glue stay in good shape for next year.
