If the tablets were going to decompose and do anything useful at all, warm soil and actively growing transplants seemed like the best setup.

2. The exact broccoli setup

I transplanted 12 broccoli seedlings into a raised bed that measures 4 feet by 8 feet. The variety was a late-season type intended for fall harvest, and the seedlings were about 5 to 6 inches tall at transplant time with 4 to 5 true leaves each. I spaced them 18 inches apart in two offset rows.

In tiny amounts, those ingredients are not likely to harm a garden bed, and some may simply decompose along with other organic matter. That could partly explain why the powder disappeared into the soil fairly quickly.

Still, this is where I’d urge some caution. Not every supplement is clean or simple. Some include artificial sweeteners, flavorings, dyes, high sodium content, or extra compounds you may not want in the vegetable bed. Mine was a plain tablet, not a gummy, chewable, or softgel. I would not bury cherry-flavored joint gummies around food crops, and I definitely would not use anything with xylitol or heavy flavoring additives.

11. The weather played a big role

If I had done this in cold spring soil, I suspect I would have seen almost nothing in 3 weeks. But in August, my soil was warm, moist, and biologically busy. I watered about every 2 to 3 days, providing roughly 1 inch of water per week total between irrigation and a small shower. Those conditions favor decomposition and fast transplant recovery.

12. There were no signs of plant burn or damage

That said, I applied the crushed tablets lightly and kept them a few inches away from the stems. If someone dumped 20 or 30 tablets directly into one planting hole, that would be a very different test. With oddball soil additives, low dose is the only sensible way to experiment.

13. Would I call it a success?

I’d call it a mild success as a decomposition and soil-life experiment, not as a fertilizer breakthrough. Three weeks later, the treated broccoli looked somewhat better established, and the crushed tablets had mostly broken down. That’s enough for me to say the idea wasn’t useless.

But if you’re hoping for bigger heads, faster maturity, or a dramatic increase in growth, this is not the input I’d choose. A side-dressing of compost, a half-strength fish fertilizer drench, or an organic nitrogen feed would deliver more dependable results for broccoli every single time.

14. What I’d do differently next time

If I repeat the experiment, I’d make it more controlled. I’d use 3 groups of 4 plants each: one untreated, one with crushed glucosamine tablets, and one with a known fertilizer input such as 1 tablespoon of pelleted organic vegetable fertilizer per plant. Then I’d measure height, leaf count, and stem thickness at day 7, day 14, and day 21.

I’d also weigh the tablets before application and note the exact ingredients. If possible, I’d test soil moisture and maybe even pH in the treated versus untreated zones. That would tell me whether I’m seeing a true effect or just normal variation between plants.

15. My bottom-line advice for gardeners

If you have a small number of plain, expired glucosamine tablets and you hate throwing things away, crushing them and burying them lightly in an ornamental bed or around a few test vegetables is unlikely to be disastrous. But I wouldn’t buy glucosamine for the garden, and I wouldn’t treat it as a substitute for proper fertility.
