A “heavy-duty impact-resistant wall anchor” made from soaked kitchen sponges and household liquids sounds dramatic, but it isn’t a safe substitute for tested anchors rated for drywall, plaster, masonry, or tile. If you need to hang anything substantial or subject to vibration or impact, the right path is to use the correct commercial anchor for your wall type.

What I can show you is a practical upcycling project inspired by that idea: a sponge-based wall hole filler that can help patch an oversized screw hole so you can make a light-duty cosmetic repair before repainting. It’s inexpensive, beginner-friendly, and useful for small touch-ups around the house, but it is not for shelves, TVs, mirrors, curtain rods, or any load-bearing application. Think of it as a repair trick for minor wall blemishes, not structural hardware.

Materials

2 standard cellulose kitchen sponges, torn into 1/2-inch pieces
1/2 cup white PVA glue
1/4 cup water
1 small mixing bowl, 2-cup capacity
1 craft stick or spoon for mixing
1 putty knife, 2 to 3 inches wide
1 pair of household scissors
1 sheet 220-grit sandpaper
1 clean rag
1 light-duty screw and wall hook for testing on decorative items under 1 pound

Instructions

1. Remove any loose drywall, crumbling filler, or dust from the damaged hole with your fingers or the edge of the putty knife, then wipe the area clean with a dry rag.

2. Tear the sponges into small 1/2-inch pieces so they break down evenly and fit into the damaged area without leaving large gaps.

3. Stir the white glue and water together in the bowl until smooth, then add the sponge pieces and press them down so they absorb the liquid fully.

4. Let the sponge mixture sit for 5 minutes, then stir again until the pieces are evenly coated and soft but not dripping.

5. Squeeze a small handful of the soaked sponge mixture and press it firmly into the wall hole with the putty knife, packing it in layer by layer until the cavity is completely filled.

6. Scrape the surface nearly flush with the wall, leaving it just slightly proud so it can shrink a bit as it dries.

7. Allow the patch to dry for 12 to 24 hours, depending on wall thickness and room humidity, until it feels firm all the way through.

8. Sand the patch lightly with 220-grit sandpaper until smooth and level with the surrounding wall, then wipe away the dust.

9. Prime and paint the spot if you want an invisible finish, or for a very light decorative item under 1 pound, pre-drill a tiny pilot hole and insert a small screw only after the patch has fully cured.

Variations & Tips

For a smoother finish: Tear the sponge into even smaller pieces before soaking it. Finer texture makes the patch easier to level and sand.

For shallow damage: Use less sponge and more careful knife pressure. This works best on stripped screw holes and minor gouges, not large broken sections of drywall.

For paint-ready repairs: Apply a thin skim coat of standard spackle over the dried patch before sanding. In my kitchen, where wall dings seem to appear out of nowhere, that extra layer gives the cleanest finish.

Know the limits: Do not use this as a real anchor for heavy, valuable, or overhead objects. For dependable fastening, match the anchor to the wall type and the item weight, and follow the manufacturer’s load rating.

Better safe alternatives: For drywall, use self-drilling anchors, toggle bolts, or strap toggles; for masonry, use masonry screws or expansion anchors; for tile, use carbide or diamond drill bits with tile-rated anchors. Those products are engineered for the forces this sponge mixture simply cannot handle.
