By late August, when the tomatoes are starting to look tired and the mornings carry just the first little whisper of fall, I always turn my attention to rutabagas. Dolomitic lime is a more standard choice when you want to raise pH and add magnesium. Epsom salt, which is magnesium sulfate, is another common option when you want magnesium without the same liming effect.
That said, I understand the practical home-garden impulse to use what you already have, especially if it’s expired and headed for the trash. In a small experiment, using a modest amount of plain, crushed tablets around a few plants made more sense than wasting them. I just wouldn’t confuse a pantry-cabinet trial with a long-term soil management plan.
What I noticed about the soil itself
The crushed powder dissolved more slowly than I expected. After the first watering, I could still see a few chalky bits in the top layer. By the second week, they were mostly gone. The soil surface around treated plants did not crust badly, and I saw no root-zone burn or stem injury.

Would I do it again on rutabagas?
On a small scale, yes, I would try it again—but only under the same modest, experimental spirit. I’d use plain tablets, crush them finely, and apply no more than about 1 tablespoon around each transplant. I’d also keep the test side-by-side with untreated plants so I could compare honestly.
If I had a whole 20-foot row of rutabagas and suspected a broader magnesium problem, I would skip the medicine-cabinet approach and do things properly: a soil test first, then the right amendment at the right rate. What I’d change in the next trial
Next time, I’d measure more carefully. I’d record initial leaf spread, plant height, and perhaps root diameter at 3-week intervals.
