Instructions
1. Set the boots upright on a drop cloth or cardboard in a flat outdoor work area, and check that they stand evenly without tipping.
2. Cut or prepare two PVC pipe pieces so each is about 8 inches long, then test-fit your umbrella pole inside one to be sure the opening is wide enough.
3. Mix the concrete in a tub or bucket according to the package directions, adding water a little at a time until it reaches a thick, pourable consistency similar to stiff oatmeal.
4. Pour the wet concrete into each boot, filling them to about 1 inch below the top edge so the cement does not spill when you insert the pipe.
5. Press one PVC pipe straight down into the center of each boot, leaving about 4 inches of pipe above the concrete so it can hold the umbrella pole later.
6. Adjust the pipes until they are as vertical as possible, then gently tap the sides of the boots to release trapped air and settle the concrete around the pipe.
7. Let the boots cure undisturbed for at least 24 to 48 hours, or until the concrete is fully hard and the pipes no longer shift when touched.
8. Slide your umbrella pole into the PVC sleeve in each boot anchor as needed, or use the finished pair as weighted supports for a freestanding outdoor setup.
Variations & Tips
Match the pole size: Before mixing any concrete, confirm the PVC pipe fits your umbrella pole with a little wiggle room. A sleeve that is too snug can make the umbrella hard to remove later.
Add extra weight: For large patio umbrellas, use taller boots or slightly heavier concrete fill so the anchors have more stability. I always lean toward more weight if the setup will sit in a breezy spot.
